In 1930, engineer Renato Giurati designed two dams across the Arno, near La Penna and the Straits of Inferno, but strong opposition from large landowners caused the project to stall. The project was revived between 1953 and 1958, with the construction of the Penna Dam across the Arno to support the hydroelectric power plant. This contributed to the reclamation of the area, and the flooding of the fertile land once used for tobacco cultivation marked the decline of the Monsoglio estate. The dam provided hydroelectric power and regulated the flow of the river’s waters.
Following the construction of the dam in 1956, the environment was safeguarded, and a varied fauna was created in the Bandella Oasis, forming a large reserve. Since July 10, 1996, it has been designated as a Regional Nature Reserve, managed by the Province of Arezzo and the surrounding municipalities, including Laterina.
Its panoramic view of the surrounding plains and the artificial lake that has formed behind it make it an ideal destination for anyone looking to go on a hike.
